Why Syntropic Villages?

What We Do

Have you ever wished for more friends who share your values? A more sane or coherent political movement? A more meaningful existence? Something you could really believe in without surrendering to some narcissistic, egomaniacal guru? If so, you're not alone. And if you share the goals and minimal value set (see also The Center for the Evolution of Democracy) that our Partners have adopted, then we could be helping each other to realize our dreams for a better world.

For example, we plan to create economically self-sustaining neighborhood centers that will offer discounts to Partners but remain open to the whole community, serving up an international buffet; a coffee shop with Internet, fax, and interactive TV; copy and printing machines with design and layout for desktop publishing; print journals and newspapers; mail facilities and private mailboxes, ping pong tables, workout space, community gardens, and so on--all adding capital to our growing community investment fund as well as to the accounts of individual shareholders who share our values and political goals.

We also plan online exchange and barter systems, toolsharing, charity auctions, village elections, regular columns with follow-up discussions, chatrooms, and knowledge-sharing groups. In short, we hope to restore to your experience of the Internet and of your neighborhood a sense of wholeness, of belonging to a group that actualizes your values and that has movement toward goals that you can support. How You Can Participate and/or Invest for Fun and Profits

You can become a Partner in one of our Syntropic Investment Clubs. We save and invest in environmentally clean and citizen-friendly companies. Each Partner deposits a small amount monthly (usually between US$20 and $100) and receives a monthly newsletter and account statement by e-mail. Each month we pool our deposits and purchase stocks/mutual funds/real estate that most of us couldn't afford to buy alone. Thus by joining our resources we have access to investment opportunities that are typically only available to wealthier people (Ever hear the old refrain: "It takes money to make money"? It's not sooo true anymore!)

Our investments over the first one and a half years of our existence produced returns of from sixty to over one hundred per cent for both our individual and community accounts. Investments involve risk, of course, and past returns do not guarantee future results, but our investment horizon is long-term, our portfolio is highly diversified with shares in hundreds of socially/ecologically responsible companies around the world, and our purposes are clear.

World View Our modern "democracies" are still riddled with authoritarian, corrupt, and antidemocratic processes. Building an authentic and thoroughly democratic system takes time. Unfortunately, given the rapid drift toward global eco-disaster that is projected by world-system scientists, we may not have as much time as we think. Yet without genuinely democratic problem-solving on a global scale, humans are likely to experience catastrophic suffering over increasingly large areas of the Earth during the next fifty years. Creating democracy in time, therefore, must be the principle concern as we amble off into the Third Millennium.

Statement of Purpose

Pensema, our publishing house, publishes literature and art that is constructive in relation to major problems in the post-modern world. Pensema strives especially to further the evolution of democracy toward more just and effective forms.
